Wonderful Wednesday

Nothing to do with writing but I must record this somewhere!

I went to a geology lecture this evening about the rocks of Antarctica. It was fascinating.

More fascinating was the small collection of rocks the speaker brought along. Most of these had been collected either on Scott's fated expedition, or on Amundsen's expedition.

Picking up a small rock, about half the size of my palm, I noticed a piece of paper in the box. It had the date 16/3/11 - today's date.
I asked because the writing looked a little faded. It was not today's date but 16th March 1911 - the day that particular piece of rock had been collected.

How amazing to handle a piece of rock from the South Pole which has been handled by a great explorer, collected exactly 100 years today. I love that :D
