Tuesday Tip

What gives you a lift? What makes life worth living? What keeps you going? What tops up your batteries?

And when your get-up-and-go has got up and left, what do you do about it?

To do anything creative, like writing, we need to keep our minds in good condition.
Some people, myself included, find exercise gives us a buzz so that when we sit down to write our Muses are warmed up and ready to go.

For Emily Casey running does the trick. For me, it's brisk walking for at least half an hour.

And exercise doesn't only help with creativity. During exercise, the brain produces endorphins - natural 'feel-good' substances which increase feelings of well-being.

But there are lots of other things we can do to recharge our batteries when life has run them low.

For me some of these are:
In winter, looking at books with photos of spring and summer gardens
Meeting up with friends regularly
Going to cinema/theatre
Looking at photos taken on holidays
Joining groups of like-minded people and getting involved with projects
Walking - even in winter
Reading 'good' books
Growing vegetables (and eating them)
Going on mini-expeditions - places we've never been but are close enough to get there and back in a day
Doing relaxation/meditation

Perhaps it's a good idea to set aside some 'top-up time' and top up before we need to?

What do you need to keep you going - what would be on your list?

  1. I'm not sure what my top up ritual is. I really do need to do more exercise though, so I should get out and do some walking and see if that helps my creative mind. Thanks for the tips, Prue.

  2. Dancing is good exercise, so it jogging on the spot if you have no one to go walking with :)
I have a collection of exercise DVDs but very little motivation to use them at present.
