The first five of the miners trapped underground in Chile have been brought to the surface. Hurrah! This is humanity at its best - striving to preserve life no matter what it takes. Three cheers for everyone concerned, not least for those who have been underground for so long, in unpleasant conditions, with no guarantee that what was being done was going to work; for those doing what they could to get to the miners; for their families who had to wait.
My thoughts will be with them all today; my prayers are that the miners will all come up safely and they, and their familiers, will be none the worse for the experience.
President Pinera said, "when Chile is united, we are capable of doing great things."
That's true of all of us.
